As a small business owner in the time of Covid and the ever changing world of social media, it is often a struggle to stay connected and reaching new people seems sometimes impossible.
Around 10 years ago I started this little business as a hobby on Etsy. Back then, Etsy was really about the art and handmade items from small business owners. After some success there I switched to a different platform which fit my needs better at the time, but then there were market changes on top of changes in my personal life causing me to move back over to Etsy. While I was still getting sales, the changes that happened to Etsy while I was away, just were not working for me, so I came to the conclusion that it was time for me to create my own website and give it the look and feel I wanted for my customers. It took some time but in October of 2019, I completed the transition and had my very own website for showcasing my products.
While this was a very big step for me and I felt very accomplished, I was left wondering how to get people to find my site, without breaking the bank. I attempted many things on my own with social media, attended free local trainings and webinars whenever I could, shared with my family and friends and attended local shows and markets. I was just never able to make as many connections as I wanted to.
As luck would have it, one of the groups from my Alma mater that I had worked with over the summer, Northern Michigan University’s Invent at NMU, advertised an opportunity for a Digital Marketing Fundamentals course through a partnership with CORI (Center on Rural Innovation) and Udacity. A completely free marketing course! It felt like this was the opportunity that I had been waiting for, so I signed up as soon as registration opened and was able to complete the course within a few weeks. I gained so much knowledge and was eager for an opportunity to take it to the next level! I decided to take the next step and enroll in the Digital Marketing Nanodegree Program #lminDMND through Udacity. So far the course has not disappointed and I am very much looking forward to the opportunities that completing this program will bring not only to my small business but I feel like the world of content marketing is limitless.
